About the Waste Management Program

The role of the Saint Louis County Department of Public Health Waste Management Program (WMP) is to protect public health and the environment by encouraging greater diversion from landfill disposal and regulating the solid waste management system. The WMP has three sections: Waste Diversion, Field Services, and Waste District Contracts.

The Waste Diversion Section provides public education and outreach, technical assistance and grant funding to reduce the volume of waste sent for landfill disposal. The voter approved 5% surcharge on waste deposited in St. Louis County landfills helps to fund Waste Diversion programs.

The Field Services Section enforces the County-wide Waste Management Code, Chapter 607. The Waste Code regulates the handling, storage, transportation and disposal of all solid waste, special waste, demolition waste, medical waste and recovered materials.

The Waste District Contract Section manages the waste collection contracts for the eight unincorporated waste districts established by the St. Louis County Council in 2008.
