How to obtain a Birth or Death Certificate

The Saint Louis County Office of Vital Records can issue certified copies of birth and death certificates for the entire state of Missouri. The years available for birth certificates are 1920 to the present. The years available for death certificates are 1883 to the present; however deaths that occurred prior to 1980 must have occurred in Saint Louis County.


Looking for a marriage license? Marriage licenses are maintained by the Recorder of Deeds in the Department of Revenue.

Include the following information:


 
  • Full name
  • Daytime phone number
  • Date of birth or death
  • State of birth or death
  • Your relationship to the individual named on the record
  • The purpose for the copies
  • For birth records, also include father's name and mother's maiden name.

    Please note that all requests for birth and death certificates sent in through regular mail MUST be notarized by a notary public in order to be processed.


     
     
    •  Certified copies of birth records cost $15.00 each.
    •  Certified copies of death records cost $13.00 for the first copy
    •  Additional copies of the same death certificate ordered at the same time cost $10.00 each.
    •  Make checks payable to Vital Records
    •  If making a request by mail, please enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope and allow
          two weeks for processing
