Unless indicated otherwise, the following locations accept single-stream recycling items. View a complete list of acceptable materials. NOTE: Saint Louis County ordinance requires residential haulers who serve one-and two-family residences to provide once-a-week recycling and collect single stream materials. Multifamily complexes are not required to include recycling, but multifamily residents are encouraged to contact their property owners to express their desire to recycle. Appliances

Major appliances (refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, trash compactors, hot water heaters and other white goods) have been banned from landfill disposal since 1991. Your hauler may collect appliance but it may require special arrangements and fees. Call your hauler for details. When you purchase a new appliance, ask the representative or distributer if they will take the old appliance you are replacing.

Batteries

The best option, when trying to keep batteries out of landfills, is to choose rechargeable batteries. Depending on the frequency of use, proper handling, and charging, the average AA rechargeable battery can be recharged up to 1,000 times! See below for ways to recycle all types of batteries.

Lead-Acid Batteries - Automotive

Retailers are required to accept a used battery in exchange for a newly purchased battery. If you want to get rid of a battery without buying a new one, ask a retailer if they will accept it (fees may apply), or take it to the following location (call to confirm hours and ask about fees):

Single-Use/Non Rechargeable Batteries

Single-use alkaline batteries do not have hazardous characteristics and can be safely disposed of in your trash. Alkaline batteries can be recycled, but recovery of the materials currently exceeds their market value. Consequently, fees apply for most recycling options, with the exception of WITS locations. The various Batteries Plus locations accept single-use batteries for a small fee, or use the following mail back options which also have fees:

CFLs – Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs  (view map)

If every home in America replaced just one incandescent light bulb with an ENERGY STAR qualified compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) in one year it would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes and prevent greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those of more than 800,000 cars. CFLs contain a very small amount of mercury sealed within the glass tubing so the best disposal option is recycling.

Ameren’s website allows you to enter your zip code to find a wide variety of places that accept CFL bulbs for recycling.

Electronics

Many electronics contain hazardous materials such as lead and mercury. If your electronic equipment is not obsolete, call around to see if a local school or charity will take it as a donation. If reuse is not an option, we suggest recycling electronics so materials can be recovered, therefore, minimizing environmental impacts and unnecessary energy consumption.

Recycle electronics in one of the following ways:

1.	See if the manufacturer will take back old electronics when you buy new equipment.
2.	Inquire at local electronic stores such as Best Buy, which recently launched an electronics recycling program, if they can recycle your electronics.
3.	Take electronics to a local, registered drop-off center.

Home Medical Equipment

New and used home medical equipment (electric hospital beds, shower chairs, canes, crutches, wheelchairs, walkers, scooters, ramps, chair lifts, grab bars, etc.) can be donated for reuse to St. Louis HELP. At St. Louis HELP, home medical equipment is collected and distributed to anyone in need at no cost or fee. For more information, see www.stlhelp.org. Polystyrene – Styrofoam  (view map)

EPC makes it possible to recycle polystyrene with a machine that crushes the foam and condenses it into a heavy “log”. This reduces the volume over a hundred times, making it economical to ship and sell for processing into new packaging. When recycling this packing material at EPC, be sure to seal the material tightly in plastic bags. Hours of collection are between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday – Friday. Food packaging and packing "peanuts" are not accepted.
