A: Call 911 when there is a crime in progress, a fire, a medical emergency, when someone is in physical danger or in other situations in which help is needed immediately.

A: For those situations in which the immediate intervention of emergency personnel is not needed, call 889-2341 , the 24 hour general information line of the County Police Department. Q: How do I call for police or emergency assistance on my cellular phone?
A: The 911 number works on your cellular phone the same way as on your home phone. There are two major differences however that you should be aware of. One, unlike your home phone, your exact location and phone number are not displayed. Cellular phones do not provide this information. The police or emergency services dispatcher will not know where you are calling from. You must provide the specific location of where help is needed. Two, because you are normally moving when you place a 911 call on a cellular phone, you may or may not be connected to the proper 911 center serving your area. For example, you may have just observed an automobile accident while in St. Louis City, but you have since traveled into the County when you dial 911. As a result, your call may have to be transferred to the proper jurisdiction. Please be patient.
