Judge Smith was appointed associate circuit judge on November 16, 1995.

Judge Smith received his Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Math and Computer Science from Washington University. He received his Juris Doctorate degree from Duke University.

Judge Smith is a former assistant public defender for St. Louis County and was in private practice prior to being appointed Family Court Commissioner in August, 1992. He has also served as mayor of Ellisville, Missouri.

Judge Smith is a member of the Missouri Bar, St. Louis County Bar Association and the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis.

Judge Smith resides in St. Louis County with his wife. They have four children.
