Waste Management Branch
The St. Louis County Department of Health has announced its Grant
Round 4 recipients. The grantees were selected because of their
creative and cost-effective approach to reduce waste and expand
recycling in their neighborhoods. Since 1995, the Department of
Health has awarded almost $1.8 million in grants to increase residential
recycling
Below are summaries of the projects:
Grantee: City of Florissant
Amount funded to: $10,000
Project:. Funds will cover a portion of general operating costs
of the City's recycling drop-off center. In addition, the City
will provide signage at drop-off and conduct an education program,
with involvement of a community group, to educate residents about
recycling options, including curbside and drop-off.
Grantee: City of Kirkwood
Amount funded to: $14,560
Project: Assist in payment of staff at the City's recycling depository.
Funds will partially cover personnel costs for one staff person.
In addition, the grantee will conduct an education program, with
involvement of a community group, to raise awareness of recycling
options, including curbside and drop off.
Grantee: City of Northwoods
Amount funded to: $27,800
Project: Launch a paper collection drop-off site and help fund
an education program to expand awareness of curbside recycling.
Funds will be used for rental of paper collection containers,
purchase of two recycled content park benches and recycling and
education costs for collection activities.
Grantee: City of University City
Amount funded to: $73,532
Project: Develop a pilot "Pay-as-You-Throw" program
to move the City to the next progressive level of recycling participation.
Funds will partially cover program research and start-up costs,
including contractor and education costs. Also, the City will
receive up to six recycled-content park benches to promote resident
awareness of the benefits of recycling.
Grantee: City of Woodson Terrace
Amount funded to: $27,800
Project: Implement a paper collection drop-off site and help fund
an education program to expand awareness of curbside recycling.
Funds will be used for rental of paper collection containers,
purchase of two recycled content park benches and recycling and
education costs for collection activities.
Grantee: Paint Solutions
Amount funded to: $87,051
Project: Establish eight recyclable household chemical collection
mobile collection events. Funds will be used for program promotion,
conduction of collection events, waste management (recycling/fuel
blending) and distribution of recycled latex paint.
Grantee: Peerless Park Demolition Landfill, Inc.
Amount funded to: $10,800
Project: Help fund recovery and recycling of wood, vinyl, and
drywall from incoming loads to the landfill. Funds will partially
cover some operational and educational costs.
Grantee: Remains, Inc.
Amount funded to: $40,000
Project: Pilot a recycling project for County-wide mobile collection,
recycling drives and home pick-up service for discarded textiles.
Funds will cover the rental of collection containers and truck.
Grantee: Resource Recovery Project
Amount funded to: $4,000
Project: Expand a redistribution program of other household non-traditional
recyclables to educators in St. Louis County. Funds will partially
cover education costs.
Grantee: Second Chance Materials
Amount funded to: $40,000
Project: Provide up to twenty drop-off sites for business-generated
PVC, vinyl siding, plate glass and wood pallets. Funds will be
used for rental of collection containers and vehicle.
Grantee: St. Louis County Department of Planning
(on behalf of Spanish Lake area)
Amount funded to: $50,790
Project: Initiate a bulky item collection and recycling event
for Spanish Lake and surrounding area. Funds will be used for
collection and equipment costs, in addition to material and personnel
costs for education outreach and collection day activities.
