Saint Louis County Department of Health Awards Grants to 10 Municipalities
More than $145,000 in grant money awarded
for recycling-related projects

July 24, 2002. The Saint Louis County Department of Health recently awarded mini-grants to 10 municipalities located in the County. The awarded mini-grants totaled $145,490 and will be used for a variety of recycling-related projects. Some of the projects include recycling education, "buy recycled" promotion, conducting a needs assessment, and yard waste management programs. These awards mark the seventh round of grants distributed by the Department's Waste Management Branch through its Recycling and Source Reduction Program. Since 1995, the Waste Management Branch has awarded more than $2.3 million in grant money for community recycling projects throughout the County.

The grant program has been used to promote environmentally responsible programs and practices. "This grant money enables municipalities in the County to develop and implement recycling-related programs, which serves the Department's goal of diverting 40% of waste from landfills," said Jacquelynn A. Meeks, DrPH, Director of the Saint Louis County Department of Health. The program is funded by a voter-approved 5% surcharge on waste deposited in Saint Louis County landfills.

Summer 2002 Grantees

Under its Recycling and Source Reduction Program, the Saint Louis County Department of Health has awarded 10 municipalities mini-grants totaling $145,490 for a variety of recycling-related projects. The program is funded by a voter-approved 5% surcharge on waste deposited in Saint Louis County landfills.

Grantee: City of Breckenridge Hills Amount awarded: $19,000
Project: Conduct research as part of an education campaign to increase participation in the city-funded curbside recycling program. Breckenridge Hills will also develop and mail targeted recycling education materials, and advertise in the local newspapers.
Grantee: City of Charlack Amount awarded: $20,000
Project: Implement a "buy recycled" promotion, including purchase and installation of recycled-content playground equipment and rubberized mulch, and distribute educational materials.
Grantee: City of Creve Coeur Amount awarded: $8,900
Project: Implement an education program to raise awareness of the City's recycling program. Funds will be used to purchase and distribute educational materials.
Grantee: City of Moline Acres Amount awarded: $4,083
Project: Conduct three public opinion surveys to identify opportunities for improving participation rates in the City's recycling programs. The City will also distribute County recycling education materials and partner with Abitibi Recycling to encourage office paper recycling in City Hall.
Grantee: City of Normandy Amount awarded: $20,000
Project: Purchase recycled-content yard waste containers. Normandy will also develop and distribute educational flyers about new programs and yard waste reduction tips.
Grantee: City of Pagedale Amount awarded: $19,092
Project: Purchase recycled plastic picnic tables and receptacles. Funding will also be used to distribute brochures, other promotional items, signage, and recycling information.
Grantee: Village of Velda Village Hills Amount awarded: $900
Project: Implement residential needs assessment, develop recommendations for recycling program, distribute educational materials, and train community leaders.
Grantee: City of Vinita Park Amount awarded: $19,950
Project: Promote "buy recycled" and build support for the Pay-As-You-Throw program. The City will use the funds to purchase recycled plastic toters, park signage, and distribute promotional materials.
Grantee: City of Winchester Amount awarded: $13,910
Project: Purchase replacement recycled plastic lumber for picnic tables and park benches. New recycle awareness signage will be installed and educational materials will be distributed.
Grantee: City of Woodson Terrace Amount awarded: $19,655
Project: Purchase and install recycled-content park benches and signage, establish plastic recycling drop-off sites, distribute County recycling education materials and conduct residential training.
