How to obtain a Birth or Death Certificate

Office of Vital Records now has new hours:

Mondays and Wednesdays   8:00 am to 4:30 pm
Tuesdays and Thursdays   8:00 am to 6:00 pm
Fridays 10:00 am to 2:30 pm
Saturdays   9:00 am to 12:00 pm

Saint Louis County Office of Vital Records can issue certified copies of birth and death certificates for the entire state of Missouri. The years available for birth certificates are 1920 to the present. The years available for death certificates are 1883 to the present; however deaths that occurred prior to 1980 must have occurred in St. Louis County.

Looking for marriage licenses? Marriage licenses are maintained by the
Recorder of Deeds in the Department of Revenue.

You can now order certified copies of birth or death certificates online.

A certified copy of a birth or death record may also be obtained by visiting our office or by sending a written request to:

Include the following information:
  • Full name,
  • Date of birth or death,
  • Hospital where birth or death occurred,
  • Your relationship to the individual named on the record, and
  • The purpose for the copies.
  • For birth records, also include father's name and mother's maiden name.

  • Certified copies of birth records cost $15.00 each.
  • Certified copies of death records cost $13.00 for the first copy
  • Additional copies of the same death certificate ordered at the same time cost $10.00 each.
  • Make checks payable to Vital Records
  • If making a request by mail, please enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope and allow two weeks for processing
