Missouri Term Limits
On Nov. 3, 1992, the voters of Missouri passed Constitutional Amendment No. 12, proposed by
initiative petition, to place term limits on the number of years that could be served by members
of the general assembly. The ballot language of the proposition read:
"Shall Article III of the Constitution of Missouri be amended by adding a new section eight
that would prohibit a person from serving more than eight years in either the state house of
representatives or state senate, or a total of sixteen years in both houses, with any service
resulting from an election or appointment occuring prior to the effective date of this
amendment not counted toward the total number of years a person could serve?
There could be indirect cost to state government; there would be no cost to local government."
