Historical Gardens
In County Parks, gardeners help history grow.

Faust Park
Designed and implemented in 1993 by Claire Schumann, the centerpiece of the Faust Historical Village is its Heirloom Garden. Currently under the care of Master Gardener Cathy Arnold, volunteers work to continue Claire’s vision of a rural home’s culinary and medicinal herb garden from the 1800’s. In proximity to the Mertz Cabin and Conway House, the garden beds contain herbs, medicinal plants, vegetables and a “dye garden”. Faust Heirloom Garden volunteers meet every Tuesday and Saturday at 9:00 AM from April through October. For more information contact Lori Ritchey at 636-532-7298.

Jefferson Barracks
The Laborer’s Garden, like the Laborer’s House, offers a glimpse of life in Missouri during the civil war. Retired AT&T employees plant herbs and vegetables, including potatoes, rhubarb, and eggplant. They recreate the time period not only through their choice of plants, but also by remembering to “plant a row for the needy.” They donate their harvest to a food pantry through Feed My People. Most of the plants have already been donated once. Local nurseries, such as Wiethop Nursery donate the seeds. |
