Eighteenth Century Plants
1700-1799

Aster Alpinus Eighteenth-century gardens exhibited a refinement of the earlier fashion. Symmetrical beds flanked a central walkway, culminating in a feature of some sort, whether a sundial, statue, vine-covered arbor or simply a pleasing view. The pleasure garden, now distinct from the old kitchen garden, was becoming common. The beds contained flowers and ornamentals, the garden boundaries often defined with fruit trees. A preferred site was at the rear of the house, where one could stroll from the house straight into the garden. Fences or hedges to enclose the garden remained a standard feature, to keep the garden free from wandering livestock and to maintain privacy.
