St. Louis County Police Chief Timothy Fitch Announces New Crime Mapping System

For Immediate Release 08-Oct-2009

On Thursday, October 8, 2009, 2009, Chief Timothy Fitch announced a new web browser Crime Mapping System that provides citizens the ability to locate where crime had occurred in their neighborhood. The mapping application is available for all of unincorporated St. Louis County as well as municipalities that contract with the County Police for police services. To access the Crime Mapping System, please go to the St. Louis County Police webpage at www.stlouisco.com/police/

Chief Fitch stated: "Our Department developed this application in-house, resulting in no additional cost from outside vendors to us or the municipalities we contract with. Citizens will be able to go to their computers and view crime data for 90 days at a time. The information can be found by searching by crime type, address or date. The data that appears on the screen will be provided by the County Police Department's Records Management System on a daily basis from information extracted from approved police reports. No data will be released regarding crimes that include sexual offenses".

Chief Fitch added: "Many individuals have worked diligently on this project for the past 7 months, especially Mr. Brett Lord-Castillo, Information Systems Designer/GIS Programmer assigned to our Office of Emergency Management. In addition to Mr. Lord-Castillo, our Planning & Analysis Unit has provided data of all Part I Crimes that are searchable by month and precinct back to 2005. The new system is compatible with all Internet browsers however anyone using Microsoft Internet Explorer must use a version 7 or greater."

County Executive Charlie A. Dooley stated: "I commend the St. Louis County Police Department and Chief Timothy Fitch for making this very valuable research tool available to the public. Identifying troubled areas and knowing what is going on in your own neighborhood is information that can affect families and businesses. As we strive towards a safer St. Louis County, we welcome the citizens to view the data provided by the St. Louis County Police and the participating municipalities."
