Recycle Quiz

These items harm recycling workers and their equipment when taken to one of the three material recovery facilities located in St. Louis County. The facilities or MRFs (pronounced MURF) are designed to sort paper, boxes and rigid plastic containers. Unfortunately our MRFs are seeing an increase of items that don’t belong. Plastic bags, holiday lights and home sharps are the biggest offenders, but clothing, wading pools and even garden hoses have been pulled from the sorting systems. The facilities shut down for hours every day to cut plastic bags and other tangles from screens and conveyor belts.

Plastic Bags
Recycle Quiz

Return plastic bags to the store. Most supermarkets and large retail stores have a plastic bag collection bin located near the entrance. In addition to retail plastic bags, these outlets also accept bread bags, newspaper sleeves, zip lock bags and more. Visit for more information.

Holiday Lights

Holiday lights have valuable copper and metal that should be recovered. Most scrap dealers and electronic recyclers accept holiday lights. Below are the St. Louis County licensed locations.

Home Needles and Sharps
Recycle Quiz

Needles and sharps cannot be recycled. They can be disposed of in the trash, if they are in a rigid, puncture proof container such as a bleach or detergent bottle. Even though a rigid bottle is recyclable, it cannot be separated from the sharps. When these containers are put in the recycling, it poses a hazard to the recycling workers. NEVER put sharp and needle containers in the recycling.
